This tip is my biggest contribution to the technique of paper piecing!
It is an easy way to add an odd-shaped or angled piece without using a template.
To match up angles and simplify cutting of odd-shaped pieces, lay your foundation unit, fabric side up, on your work surface. Take a large piece of the fabric to be used in the odd-shaped or angled area and set it right side up on the top of the fabric side of the foundation unit in the proper position to cover the area to be filled.
With scissors, carefully cut a large rectangle, more than sufficient to fill the space. Do not skimp and try to save fabric, but keep in mind that you will end up with larger usable scraps of fabric after trimming.
Pin this fabric in place to the paper foundation, before flipping the foundation unit over and placing on your cutting mat.
Lay an index card on top of the area THAT IS TO BE FILLED, lining up the edge of the card with the line between the area to be filled and the previous piece.
Fold the foundation unit, (paper and fabric), back on the line over the index card, exposing the new piece of fabric.
Place the 1/4" mark of your rotary ruler on the fold of the foundation and trim the new piece.
After trimming, turn the foundation unit over, remove the pins, and carefully flip the new piece of fabric over on top of the previous piece, right sides together.
Turn the foundation unit over and sew on the line.
This technique can also be used to place directional fabric in the proper orientation!
